That means there were two jobs that should be accomplished, upgrading WordPress and removing spam comments.

WordPress has already provided steps to perform upgrading in the Readme file. Because I didn’t use theme and plugins from third parties what I did was just uploading all the WordPress files and then pointing browser to the file upgrade.php. I even forgot to rename the file wp-config-sample.php. However it works well.

The advantage of using WP 2.3, besides providing a built-in tagging facility, is it allows user to remove comments with “Mass Edit Mode”. A really time saver, especially because there are about 600 spam comments on this blog that need to be removed. Perhaps it is the time to use Akismet or any other AntiSpam plugin.

As one of the most domain registrars available today, NameCheap.com allows a webmaster to purchase cheap domain names. Currently the price for a .com domain is only $8.88 with the bonus of free whois protection (WhoisGuard) for one year. This offer is more interesting because you can get the free whois protection even if you only buy one domain. The price for a .info domain name is also much cheaper than many other companies. But although the prices offered are relatively cheaper, another popular registrar, GoDaddy, offers free extras such as free hosting with web site builder for every new domain name you purchase.

I can not tell you how good is NameCheap at the moment because I have just tried their service. But I believe both of them (NameCheap and Godaddy) have different advantages and disadvantages. One of the features I like most which is provided by GoDaddy is the “Status Alert” feature where you will get an email everytime something happens to your domain name. For example the alert will work in case there is someone changes the DNS addresses of a domain name. In addition I know the quality of their customer support who is quite fast and helpfull. The protection provided by Domains By Proxy also works well so far to stay away from spam messages. Of course everyone might have different views about both companies. However if you intend to host multiple websites, it would be a good idea to purchase domain names from both of them and use another hosting companies that supports for multiple websites under one hosting account such as Hostony or Hostgator.

I have used eSyndicate to build some link directories for some of my websites. Now I am looking for another script/software for that purpose. Nothing wrong with eSyndicate. Overall, it is a good software. Easy to load, easy to install and very customizable. Unfortunately I have met some difficulties when trading links with sites which have extra tags in their links’ title (e.g. http://www.domain.com” id=”2382″). For that example the link can not be clicked because there is an “id” tag. Although some cases could be solved by inserting such links in the Description Form, I think it is time to try another reciprocal linking program at least for one or two site(s) I have. It is not wise to change all of my link directories just because I could not trade links with some websites.

One of the simplest link trackers I have ever known. But that is all what I need in order to know how many times a link has been clicked. The installation process didn’t run smoothly because there was no clear explanation about it. It seems that one has to move the .htaccess file manually after installing the script.

What I like about this script are:
- Simple! I like something simple. Here is an example of how it presents the data:

- A user can use single database for different domains. He only needs to change the table prefix for each domain. Alhough Hostony allows me to setup unlimited databases, but using one database like this gives some advantages, particularly because I have to access the database in order to see visitors’ IP address and the time they clicked my links.
- The tracking URL is presented like this: http://www.domain.com/go/destination.html. It is nice to see the url ends with .html extension.

I have tried 10 links to track with this script. If it works properly, I want to use it for my other links.

Two weeks ago I installed a free classified ads script from Becanada. This script requires cgi-bin folder. The installation process is simple. Just upload the script to the cgi-bin folder, CHMOD the file and run it through web browser. One of the most interesting things about this script is the owner is allowed to paste HTML code. For instance, I added the JavaScript code from AdGizmo. In the future I will try to add code from banner and exit exchange services.

I have checked whether the email messages which were sent to ad posters contained my top and bottom ads, and the system has worked properly. That’s true that Hostony, my hosting service has already provided 400 GB monthly data transfer (data transfer is usually refered as bandwidth) and 30 000 MB web space for me. But because I want to know how much data transfer and web space the classified ad needs, I opened my weblog. It seems that I don’t have to buy extra disk space and bandwidth. After two weeks, the classified ad site only took 2% of the total data transfer and 3% of the total web space I can use.
