Who is The Real Owner of
Your Domain Name?
It is always important to have the domain name registered in your own name even if your web hosting company buys it for you. If you own a domain name you have the rights to move, delete or change the contact information of the domain.
You may try to check the real owner of your domain name by using Whois (http://www.internic.com). Make sure you can find your own name and email address on the record as the registrant contact. Furthermore you may try to contact your hosting provider about the company who registered your domain name. Ask them to give you the username and password to login to the registrar control panel in order to make sure that you are the real owner of the domain.
Each domain name has to be registered with an authority which is known as registrar. A registrar that I have personally used is GoDaddy. It is a great companion to unlimited domain hosting services.
There are several reasons why I registered my domain names with GoDaddy. First, besides reliable, the price is also cheaper. Second, I can set DNS addresses easily anytime I want without having to ask my hosting service to do it for me. So if you want to use an unlimited web hosting provider like Hostgator or Hostony, consider to use GoDaddy or other reliable domain name registrars when purchasing domain names.
Please notice that some hosting companies such as Hostony provides one free domain name for their new customers but you may not be allowed to move the domain name. Just read their TOS about it. However it is free, right? :-)
